Aquatics

This National YMCA Aquatic Program for children five and under 

is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics

 

Parent/Child Water Adjustment Classes for children under three years of age.

This class is designed to introduce the aquatic environment to the parent and child.  They will learn basic aquatic safety and have a positive experience with their children that can help them grow closer.  This class is designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides them to learn aquatic skills.  Children have fun playing with toys that are used to motivate them to move by kicking and paddling.  Plastic pants or a swim diaper manufactured for swim use is required.  Swim diapers can be purchased at the front desk for $1.00.

Pre-School Lessons-Ages Three to Five

These classes are designed for those participants with little or no swimming experience.  The children are taught the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming.  Participants will work toward accomplishing kicking, floating, and independent swimming.  Parental accompaniment in the water is optional.

    Pike:  Supported floating, gliding, kicking, and water safety.

    Eels:  Floating, breathing, front crawl with floatation, and water safety

    Rays/Starfish:  1 minute float, front crawl, elementary back stroke, and water safety.

Youth Swim Lessons-Ages Six and Older

Children practice and build upon skills that were previously taught in the younger classes.  These progressive lessons will gradually introduce them to the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and diving.  To help you choose the correct class for your child please read the following descriptions and select the class that best describes what your child will be learning.  If they are beginners with few or no water skills, they should be placed in the Polliwog class.

    Polliwog: Supported floating, gliding, kicking, breathing, and water safety.

    Guppy:  Floating, gliding, front crawl, rotary breathing, and water safety.

    Minnow:  Front crawl, back crawl, and introduction to diving, and water safety.

    Fish:  Breaststroke kick, elementary backstroke, dolphin kick, and water safety.

    Flying Fish and Shark:  Butterfly, breaststroke, individual medley, competitive starts and turns, endurance, and water        

    safety.

Blue Water Otters Swim Team                  

 

The goal of the YMCA competitive swim program is to teach values, to develop self-esteem, and to teach stroke development.  This program is designed for the swimmer who is interested in a competitive program but needs to develop skills and endurance.  The goal of the team is to develop strokes, starts, and turns to a competitive level. Swimmers must have a Guppy level skills and be able to tread water.  Swimmers will participate in swim meets against other YMCA's.
